The case for experimentation.

I have recently been confronted with several life changes. Some have been in my control, others not so much – a pandemic virus for example!

I was working with my health coach talking about how I might “organize my life” to accommodate everything I want in it – growing in to a new professional opportunity, continuing as a young entrepreneur, serving as an advocate and example of personal self-care, being a supportive wife, sister, daughter, community member, care taker of a family home I love and evolving as a leader.

It seemed daunting listing it off.

But as she was holding space for me and asking evoking questions, it hit me. I needed what I encourage my clients to do – see all of this like a new experiment.

What if I framed these new and unexpected additions to my life as an experiment to learn about myself? To learn about others? To offer myself grace to fail, but learn from the “failure”?

Experiments are fun. It’s like traveling back in time to high school science class when they let you mix chemicals and see how they respond to one another. You know you’re safe (because the teacher is there), but don’t always know what you’re going to get!

It was as if a weight was lifted from my shoulders. I smiled. I was immediately relieved that I didn’t have to tackle it all with a “perfect plan.”

 But rather:

·       Experiment with resources.

·       Experiment with time allocation.

·       Experiment with who I am and who I want to keep growing to be.

·       Experiment with learning new things and allowing some things to take a back seat.

·       Experiment with holding strong to my faith and hearing what He has in store alongside me.

What do you have going on in your life right now that you might reframe as an experiment? Is it embracing a new nutrition plan? Is it finding a movement activity you enjoy? Is it offering yourself grace and rest when your body calls for it?

How might we support one another in experimentation?

I’d love to hear about your experiments!!! I’ll let you know how my journey’s experiments continue to unfold!
